'Ich bin jene, die die Natur des Menschen im Hinblick auf die Ähnlichkeit des modellhaften Weltgerüstes modellierte, damit er in seiner Natur wie in einem Spiegel die Schrift der Welt selbst vergleichen kann. Wie nämlich der vier Elemente einträchtige Zwietracht, einzigartige Vielfalt, missklingender Gleichklang, nicht übereinstimmendes Übereinstimmen die Struktur des königlichen Palastes, der Welt, versöhnt, so fügt der vier Beschaffenheiten gleichartige Ungleichheit, unähnliche Ähnlichkeit, formlose Gleichförmigkeit, unterschiedliche Unterschiedlosigkeit das Gebäude des menschlichen Leibes zusammen. Und die Beschaffenheiten, die als Vermittlerinnen zwischen den Elementen auftreten, sind dieselben, die zwischen den vier Temperamenten einen dauerhaften Frieden gewährleisten. Und wie gegen die festgesetzten Bewegung des Firmamentes das Heer der Wandelsterne in widersprechendem Lauf streitet, so entdeckt man im Menschen eine andauernde Feindseligkeit von der Lust und der Vernunft.
Die Bewegung der Vernunft nämlich nimmt ihren Aufgang bei den Himmlischen, durchläuft das Irdische, das Hinfällige und wird durch das Denken zum Himmel zurückbewegt. Im Gegenteil dazu schlingern die planetenhaften Bewegungen der Luft gegen das Feste der Vernunft, wobei sie im Irdischen lavieren. Sie verführt den menschlichen Geist in den Fall, in die Laster, um ihn zu töten. Jene lädt ihn ein in den Aufstieg, die Tugend, damit er erstehe. Diese verwandelt den Menschen degenerierend in eine Bestie. Jene verklärt ihn der Möglichkeit nach zu Gott. Sie erleuchtet die Nacht des Geistes durch das Licht der Beschauung. Jene vernichtet das Licht des Geistes durch die Nacht der Begierlichkeit. Sie lässt den Menschen mit Engeln sprechen. Jene zwingt ihn, mit Tieren zu zechen. Sie lehrt den Menschen, wie er im Exil die Heimat zu finden. Jene zwingt in der Heimat den Menschen ins Exil.' (Alanus ab Insulis, Die Klage der Natur, úbersetzt von J.B. Köhler)

Our friend Alain nicely juxtaposes our quandary as humans: we live within the struggle of reason versus lust; the tension between them threatens to pull us apart. To try and resolve the tension, we can think: oh, the hell with earth and this animal body of mine, I’ll refute it and enter into the celestial realm… but doing so, we become inhuman, a ghost, with no body, and no ego – just a thought, not a reality, welcomed by Lucifer as one of his ghosts to control. On the other hand, we can think: oh, to hell with the spiritual world, that’s a lot of bunk, I’ll just refute it and enter completely into my animal nature and enjoy life… but doing so, we become only a beast… welcomed by the dark lord of the earth, who gladly receives our body under his control, to enslave us.
What to do? Let’s find the middle way, a Third Way, refuting neither our spiritual self nor our bodily self, instead acknowledging both and using the tension between them as a source for our development, a force that gives us the strength to persevere toward our future. In the ongoing interplay between them it’s “three steps forward, two steps back”, back and forth we go -- but that one resulting step forward of development is real – it is human – we become more fully ourselves as a human being, neither a ghost nor a beast. After all, it’s that’s a reasonable thing to do.
