In this verse the principle of egoism is being felt deeply – and also the conquering of egoism that is a fact in this week. The self has lost itself – which has been achieved in the weeks after Easter, coming to this moment in August.
Thus I feel my being
That far from the being of the world
Would have to extinguish itself in itself,
And just building on its own ground in itself,
Would have to put itself to death.
So fühl ich erst mein Sein,
Das fern vom Welten-Dasein
In sich, sich selbst erlöschen
Und bauend nur auf eignem Grunde
In sich, sich selbst ertöten müsste.
