We are the passive objects for our feelings, although they are felt as subjective – which they are. But they overcome us, we don’t activate them. That however is exactly what we will have to develop in coming times: to feel only what we want to feel. A kind of choosing from the palette of feelings must be learned, so that we for instance will never be depressed anymore. A kind of energy will have to enter our feelings. That doesn’t mean that we wouldn’t be sad anymore, but we wouldn’t be sad anymore about ourselves. The depression from self-pity would be overcome. At the other side we would also not be exhilarated anymore, a kind of positive feeling that is out of control, we would know how to regulate our joy so, that it stays joyful. For this purpose we should deepen our knowledge about constructive feeling. It is a mystical deepening in the wonderful world of feeling.

The modern human being has lost this knowledge completely, he only knows about two kinds of feeling: sympathy and antipathy, or joy and grief, or lust and annoyance. All these are subjective feelings that overcome us, we are the object for this feelings. But there is a world of feelings that belongs to the polarity sympathy – antipathy, and that we can study by feeling them mystically. We will feel the need to develop an ability to exaggerate the feelings, in a controlled way. For if we try to grasp the feelings, they always seem to be too indistinct. When we have woken ourselves to an active controlled thinking, we can also grasp our feelings and bring them into a maturation.

In times of German idealism, at the turn of the 18th into the 19th century, this capability to let the ideas grow to ideals culminated. Idealism transformed in romanticism – and in its pure form this is exactly what we need to become a master in feeling.

By giving the mean a high meaning,
the common a mysterious esteem,
the familiar the virtue of the unknown,
the finite an infinite shine,
I romanticize it.

These sentences hail from the poet Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg, 1772 -1801), who was as a poet a master in romanticizing.
We can also meditate on high feelings, for instance the feeling of wonder, or the feeling of ardour.

An object to exercise the feeling of wonder.Active Feeling by Mieke Mosmuller

Waking up in thinking is the first thing that we should achieve, to become able to see ourselves what the angels do in our souls, and so to prevent us becoming instinctive ‘devils’.
