Hearing The Truth

We are still speaking about truth, and I would like to recall once again Aristotle’s statement: if something is so and you say that it is so, then that is truth; if something is so and you say that it is not so, then that is untruth, and you can also reverse that. Now, with simple facts, of course, this is still reasonably easy to follow, but as soon as something becomes a little more complicated, it also becomes more difficult to say that something is so and that this corresponds to its actually being so. If I say there is a chestnut tree in my garden, yes, that can be verified, but when I tell a detailed story and someone retells it, then it is much more difficult, firstly to retell it exactly and secondly to verify whether it was actually said that way.

The Cure for the Effects of Electromagnetism

Yes, electromagnetism is a great counterforce when one would like to meditate and would like to do so in such a way that one enters a realm where the purely spiritual lives. When one thinks, feels and wills in ordinary life, then we are active in a mixed way, in pure thinking, even if we do not know it, in ordinary object-related thinking, in feelings, in reverie, in associations and in all kinds of impulses of will that run through one another and send us into our karma. When we then wish to meditate, one can also do this along all kinds of paths in such a way that one does not get out of this ordinary mixture at all, when one simply stops thinking, for example, or when one tries to become aware of oneself while breathing. Then concentration does indeed arise, but naturally, when one follows one’s breathing, the attention is directed towards the physical body, and one cannot say that one would then detach oneself from the physical body with one’s consciousness.
Truth in Life

Last time I tried to say one thing and another about truth. Yes, and of course it is always only about fifteen minutes or so; I do not want to make it any longer either, because I think that is not suitable for a video on YouTube. Yes, in fifteen minutes you cannot of course say very much, and afterwards, on the basis of the reactions, and also on the basis of what I myself experience in what I have said, one thing and another is added.
And so I had to think of the well-known statement by Aristotle about truth, which says: when something is so, and you say that it is so, then that is truth. When something is so, and you do not say that it is so, then that is not truth. When something is not so, and you say that it is not so, then that is truthWhen something is not so, and you say that it is so, then that is not truth. In our time that brings a smile to our faces, because this seems to be a truth as obvious as can be. Said so simply, and yet it is of course the core of what truth is, namely agreement between that which is said, written, done, and how it is, how the facts are.
Electromagnetism

Today, with a view to the coming autumn, in which we can once again develop our powers of thinking, I would like to discuss something in relation to meditation. When we meditate, and also when we try to raise ourselves to pure thinking free of sense perception, there are several obstacles that we encounter, and naturally the very first thing that is necessary is that we recognise these obstacles. What often happens is that a person sits down and begins with meditation without really preparing himself for the fact that one is beginning something that should go beyond everyday life.
Truth

Yes, we are back once again, in the warm summer we did withdraw somewhat, as far as the videos are concerned at least, and now I am going to try to pick up the thread again. I wanted, to begin with, to discuss a feeling, a perception that is becoming increasingly stronger. In, well, I think that must have been the nineties, I tried to arrive, together with a professor of Eastern philosophy, at a dissertation topic relating, on the one hand, to the ethical individualism of Rudolf Steiner, and on the other hand, to the theory of communicative action of Jürgen Habermas.

Global Warming

It is still very hot here, although the temperature has dropped by 10 degrees. Last week we had temperatures above 40 degrees here, which is unique for this region. And of course, there is a great deal of discussion about that.

Pure Perception

A few weeks ago I spoke about the bridge over the abyss, and afterwards there are always interesting comments. One comment said that there are actually two difficulties in the development of pure, will-permeated thinking. On the one hand, that sense perception is always also personal, therefore not pure, and on the other hand, that our surroundings present us with very many problems because we are constantly sitting in front of the screen. That is how one says it in Dutch.

Happiness

When I began reflecting on what happiness actually is, one quickly discovers that it cannot really be expressed in words, and that the word happiness also has very different meanings. I think we most often use it in the sense opposite to bad luck. I have been lucky, fortunately it turned out well—a form of chance that happens to you in a positive way is often referred to as happiness or luck.
Bridge over the Abyss

How do we build the bridge over the abyss between sensory consciousness and heavenly consciousness, that is indeed the great question of our time and there are of course very many movements, spiritual movements, that concern themselves with it, with this question and its answer. For me it is Anthroposophy that actually gives the most reliable answer to it. But it was already Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who looked at the whole question and told it in a fairy tale.
This fairy tale has a happy end, it ends well and the ending is truly that the bridge over the abyss has raised itself. At the beginning of the fairy tale it is still the case that the human being can indeed descend from the heavenly world into the earthly one, but once he is at home in the earthly world with sensory consciousness, then he cannot, with that consciousness, simply return again; in sleep, after death, but with earthly consciousness that is an impossibility. At the end of the fairy tale there is then more or less a free intercourse between the consciousness of the earthly world and the consciousness of the heavenly world.
